Emotions tell us a story and this story is how we feel throughout our day. The story is told to us by feeling the emotions and releasing them. When you open up and begin listening to those emotions and feelings you enter a higher state of consciousness. Here I share with you a few emotional tools and secrets that will help you become more self-aware as part of your personal development journey.

1. Use emotions as a tool to analyze a situation.
Learn not to react with emotion. First, you need to understand what emotion you are feeling. There is a reason why you feel those feelings. One great way of getting to the root cause of your feelings is by asking yourself some questions. Those questions can be like “why do I feel this way?” “What happened that made me feel like this?” “When did I start feeling this emotion?”. By understanding how you feel, you can objectively evaluate your emotions and act accordingly.
Oftentimes, you need to give yourself time to feel the emotion in order to understand it. As your progress towards tougher issues, answering those questions might get harder and harder, but in order for you to have a breakthrough, you first need to break down. From experience, reacting to a situation prior to understanding my emotion brought a lot of chaos into my relationships. I said and did things that were hurtful to everyone just because I didn’t understand the root cause of my anger. Don’t allow your emotions to rule you. Learn to master them. Let them guide you in solving problems rather than creating them. Give yourself permission to feel them because they are trying to tell you something. Don’t become the emotion, release it, and create more room in your heart.
Understanding your emotions in a never-ending task. Practice self-love and don’t forget that mistakes are an unavoidable part of life. Only through these challenges will you learn to master yourself.
2. Get emotional about your passion and goals.
When something you do comes easy to you and you instinctively feel good about it, that thing is your passion. Passion is the fuel, the energy, the motivator that gets you out of bed in the morning; it fires you up and gets you excited towards achieving your goals. If you feel as if you are getting off track, use your passion as a reminder as to why you started this journey. Once you do, you will be driven to continue pushing through the challenges you are experiencing.
A practice I recommend is when setting a goal, write why you want to achieve it. By doing so, you will understand what your pure motivations are, embrace them and let them carry you forward. Once you start reaching your goals, you will gain a sense of pride in yourself. Use that success to create momentum and let it serve as a reminder of how far you’ve come next time you hit an obstacle.
3. Feel the emotion of success and failure.
Another tool to track your emotions is using a journal or a notebook to write how it felt to have succeeded or to have failed to accomplish your goals. We all succeed and we all fail, but not everyone remembers what it feels like. Writing those feelings, lessons, and emotions will give you the fuel needed to keep pushing and trying. The way you feel when you succeed and the way you feel when you fail, are both great and valid motivators in your journey.
By committing yourself to understand your emotions, you will be able to make sense of what you feel and gain self-awareness. Only after you’ve made sense of how you feel, processed it, and accepted it, you have the power to change it. This is the secret.
Having control of any situation is an illusion. We can’t control anyone or anything. The only control we have is over ourselves. When you understand that control is internal, it reflects on the external world. Imagine how hard it is to control yourself and the energy it takes to control others. Control yourself and everything will fall into place.
Allow the emotions to connect you to what you love, it is your fuel. Welcome the emotions, accept them, surrender to them, and allow them to guide you.
