To heal from the past, you got to love who you were.
A personal experience of healing from the past was with my family. Looking back at my life, knowing what I know now, I realize, I would purposely hurt my older sister’s feelings because I was in pain. Truth be told, I didn’t know I was hurting until I was 20 years old, when I began the long process of healing my childhood trauma. When I reflect on the past, memories, and shame surface because of how I used to treat her. I was young, I was in pain, and hurting her made me feel better. To heal from the past, I accept what I’ve done, I do not pretend. I have compassion for myself because I was going through a lot at that time. Today, I don’t allow myself to get stuck in the past and I use the opportunities in the present to show her love and kindness. A significant part of this healing process was to apologize to her and take accountability. I healed a wounded child that needed to hurt her sister just to make herself feel better. I faced the pain I never wanted to feel, I took accountability for my actions, and I learned to love the little child that I once was. I cannot go back into the past but what I can do is make the best out of the present.
Some tips to heal from the past:
1. If you find yourself feeling bad about the past, accept that you can’t change what happened. You made the best decision that you could at that time, with the information you had, at the level you were at, and if a similar scenario happens again, you are going to act differently.
2. Forgive yourself and others that harmed you even if they don’t “deserve” it. Forgiveness is not for them, it is for you to set yourself free from what already happened. Forgiveness is a process that takes time and effort but it is well worth it. By forgiving, you take your power back and gain a sense of inner strength. Make peace with what already happened by forgiving. When you make peace, you can let go.
3. If someone hurt you, have compassion and forgive. Hurt people are stuck in a bad place within themselves and they bring others down so they aren’t the only ones suffering. With self-awareness, you will be able to understand when you or others are operating from a place of hurt.
4. Anger, resentment, and holding onto the past can prevent you from experiencing the present and can harm your future. Stop feeding into this destruction. The past can’t be changed so don’t punish your future because of it. No more stories about what should have been, no more blaming or waiting for solutions. Take responsibility for your happiness and wellbeing in the present by healing the past.
5. Most importantly, be in awe of yourself and how much you’ve grown. You are aware of where you can heal and improve yourself and the only time to be better is in the present.
Your brain is a massive time machine. When you overthink the past or the future, your headspace can become chaotic. What happened to you, does not need to define who you are right now. Remember to have compassion, only hurt people, hurt other people, and by being forgiving, you will free yourself.
The thoughts you think in the present are what keep the past alive. With this understanding, the way out of time traveling into the past is keeping your focus on the present. You can change your perspective – now, focus on something different – now, feel your feelings – as they are right now.
